Monday 17th October 2011

I was out bargain hunting in the morning see link.

Rain had been forecast but Pauline and Chris visited in the afternoon and we sat out in the sunshine. BUT early evening the heavens opened and we had a real downpour and a storm. At last the garden has been watered!

We tried to ring the boys in Cardiff but obviously the storm was affecting Skype, after three breaks in reception we gave up.

In the evening we watched the latest episode of Downton Abbey.

Sunday 16th October 2011

We went on a trip with the Foreign Residents Association to Bűyűkkonnuk. Guess who was also there?

President Eroğlu

It was one of Bűyűkkonnuk’s festival days. There were a lot of stalls there with local produce and crafts and even donkey rides! The entertainment was very good too. We had our lunch at the Pine restaurant and so did Dr Eroğlu and all his entourage. This was one of the contributing reasons that our lunch was not all it may have been! Of course the VIP’s had preferential treatment and we were also told that they had a new chef the previous day who was not used to catering for so many. I think there were 70 of us. We had a few mezes and then this:

Lunch!

We enjoyed the day anyway, some very good company and I didn’t have to drive! For those that don’t know, Mal doesn’t drive.

Gardening and then football in the afternoon. Man U drew!

The work in front and to the left of us is becoming quite interesting and I think we are all wondering just how many houses will be built on landfill and what happens when the rains come!

We saw the devastation to some of the houses around us the February before last.

Friday 14th October 2011

David and Kenny have friends Fatma and her daughter Latife who have created a restaurant in their home and garden in Girne called Ikimiz. They are constantly telling us what an excellent cook Fatma is and so they said they would take us for lunch there. We really did feel at home as soon as we walked through the entrance. In fact Mal and I kept saying that it really reminded us of places we used to eat at here about 12 years ago, prior to all the fast food places springing up all over the North.

Fatma does a dish of the day as well as the menu, which was what we had. Food to die for! The ambience was excellent too. Good Turkish Cypriot home cooking.

Mal is doing a website for them but meanwhile see link

We had our lunch and then Fatma brought us fresh figs and pomegranate while we watched her firing up the clay oven and preparing for that evenings kleftico night.

It was busy for a Friday lunchtime. We also looked at the dining area for winter which really looked so cosy.

It’s a place we will be going to again and again I feel as they made us so welcome.

Well worth a visit. Phone numbers are 0533 880 6272/0392 815 1589

Thursday 13th October 2011

It rained overnight and so Mal and I went out and did some weeding. Up until now the ground has been so hard. At least the rain has made it a tiny bit easier.

I have to admit, I am hooked on finding all the bargains! In fact I half wish I were living in the UK with all the bargain breaks away and meals out see link. I am now wondering just how many we can fit in when we do go back for visits. We have one booked and I have my eye on another.

I also ordered a few more Christmas presents, at last the list is getting shorter.  10 grandchildren (and the rest of the family) is a major list. Just as well it is only once a year.

Torin flew back from working in Poland and I am proud to say his first flight for 8 years without taking tablets. Eight years ago he fell at work from a great height and landed on his head, so I can understand how he must have felt about flying. He has worked so hard since the accident to ‘get back to normal’. Well done Torin!

Wednesday 12th October 2011

I seemed to spend most of the day bargain hunting. I was getting so many bargains online so I was adding them to the site.  One of them did seem too good to be true see link. Seeing as one of the hotels was in a nice area that we wanted to stay, I investigated, thinking there may be a catch in it, discovered there wasn’t and booked it for when we are in the UK in January!

Mal managed to finish off the car port roof, so we will now see how that stands up to the winter winds.

The sky was a picture in the early evening.

And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present;
the result being that he does not live in the present or the future;
he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.” ~ Dalai Lama when asked what surprised him most about humanity

Tuesday 11th October 2011

For some reason I was up by 5.30am and of course it was still dark but I took Rosie out anyway.

I then went shopping and more bargain hunting see link. I wish someone else would add some bargains or beat my prices! I guess alot of people haven’t got used to it yet but Mal has made adding a bargain a lot easier now. It has only been going for a week, so not bad so far.

I bought some quince jam. Seeing as we have planted a quince, I thought it was a good idea to taste what the jam should taste like.

Mal did a bit more of the replacement roof for the car port. I took a long time explaining how to do it but he couldn’t see what I was saying. I think I have mentioned  before he is not practical but he does try and as I have also said before, we have paid high prices for so called workmen who do a rubbish job and at least he is free! Of course Rosie watched on. She was convinced there was a lizard under the bamboo while it was on the floor!
