Monday 24th October 2011

Another walk in the mountains with Rosie first thing and we have just about filled our huge bin with pine cones now ready for lighting the log burner.

I had an appointment at Chicago’s Hair salon in Karaoğlanoğlu. I made the appointment for Monday as it is 20% off for the over 60’s, well, we have to have some benefits for getting older! Having been about 8 weeks ago, with Hasan the owner doing my hair and I had 20% off. Not today see link. I think that explains exactly what happened and I also linked it to Cyprus 44 forum. I am sick of being ripped off here and nowhere did it say Hasan’s hair cuts were not 20% off as others on C44 agreed with me. I wonder just how many others have fallen into the trap as I did. The only thing is that I won’t keep quiet about it!

A bit like a friend who bought a glass of wine for 10tl when his Turkish Cypriot friend was able to buy it at half the price in a bar in Girne.  I don’t have the proof of that one but with Chicago’s this is my experience so I know it is fact.

In the evening we went for drinks at Lena’s to celebrate Ingrid’s 30th birthday and we also discovered that Ingrid is now engaged! Congratulations to Ingrid and Ed. They make a very happy couple.

Sunday 23rd October 2011

We drove Rosie to the mountains as she can’t walk as far as she used to. She loved it but kept looking for the ball. We hadn’t taken one as she used to dive down the side of mountains after it and it really wouldn’t do her leg any good.

We collected a huge bag of pine cones to store for the winter fire. Our supplies are depleted because Mal uses them on the BBQ.

David came over in the morning to update a few things that Mal is doing on Ikimiz (restaurant) website. I think it is almost complete see link. It really is a great place to go for good traditional food. There is also a map on the website so you can find where it is.

A very sad day for Moto GP, Marco Simoncelli was killed in the Malaysian Moto GP. RIP Marco.

In the afternoon Scarlet and Jack came on the web cam.

We watched I think the worst Man U game ever, they lost 1-6, followed by a terrible Chelsea game, they lost too.

Later we talked to the boys in Cardiff who of course are now on half term.

Saturday 22nd October 2011

We took Rosie to the beach in the morning, down to Mare Monte. They have now padlocked the gate where you used to be able to drive to the beach. We have tended to go that way so it is less distance for Rosie to walk. There is also a huge ‘cement works’  there, obviously while they are creating the new Merit hotel. It used to be so nice and peaceful down there. Progress I guess. I still wonder if they are going to continue with the shopping centre and ZOO!!

We gave Cyprus Today another go to see if the news content had improved. Make your own minds up! see link

Mal was not happy and called Extend again. We were told they were fully booked for today but they would ‘tack us on the end of their working day’. Imagine our surprise when they arrived at lunchtime. Two different workers this time, up on the roof again and hopefully now, they have solved the problem.

I cleaned out the utility room, an overdue job. All I heard from Mal was “oh, that is where it was”! Things tended to get dumped in there rather than being put away. So, a good job done.

In the evening we went out to eat and not feeling particularly adventurous popped down to B and I in Alsancak. We knew it was kleftico night and that was what we both chose, only to discover that you now have to order…be warned!

Instead we both had mixed kebab. It was enormous and very good. Some of the meat went in a doggy bag for Rosie and some Mal finished for me!  We always say we have never had a bad meal there. It is also (in my opinion) the best Turkish coffee, probably because it comes from the coffee shop next door and they always bring water with it.

Friday 21st October 2011

I am getting very behind with my Bargain hunters website! see link However we waited and waited for Extend to come and sort the internet out. They arrived in the afternoon and replaced wiring from the dish down. Well, I suppose it has been in situ for 9 years, all things wear out.

A summary of Cyprus Star see link

At last we had internet…yeah! BUT it only lasted for three quarters of an hour and then lost it completely! Mal had some important exam things to email and he was not impressed.

Another episode of ‘Hidden’ in the evening.

It is getting dark earlier and earlier in the evening, mind you brilliant sun during the day so I am not complaining.

Thursday 20th October 2011

Having spent the previous day with the internet blinking in and out (mostly unuseable) Mal called Extend. No, no one else was having a problem, it was just us. Mal isn’t stupid and had already checked all our equipment and that was not the fault. Well, according to Extend, we were receiving a signal….oh no we weren’t! Mal without internet is difficult to live with. He called back and finally they agreed to come out the following day.

In the afternoon we had a wander around the ruins at Lambousa.

We have also been watching ‘Hidden’. I have to say I was very confused watching the first episode.

Wednesday 19th October 2011

Mal spent most of the day designing Ikimiz Restaurants new website. I seemed to spend the entire day hunting bargains online. see link I think I have said it before but it seems as though times are getting tough in the UK the number of deals I found.  I did manage to buy a November birthday present and get all my November and December birthday cards done online at half price. It would have been even better if I hadn’t already done the beginning of November ones at full price! That will teach me to do things too far in advance! There are so many hotel deals throughout England and cheap meal out deals.

I heard from Torin. Having travelled all over the world for 7 years for his company they met him a while back to say that redundancy was on the cards. Today they TEXT him to tell him his job had been made redundant. This was then followed by a meeting with his boss in London. They want their pound of flesh before they make him redundant, with a trip to Romania next week, shortly followed by a trip to South Africa.  Of course he is devastated after giving his all to the job.  I guess that is the way of the world we live in at the moment, no such thing as rewarding loyal employees.

Tuesday 18th October 2011

Mal at last did some pointing around the pool tiles. Every day he said it may rain but today it didn’t! In fact we had blue skies and lovely clouds.

We still haven’t been able to stop or reduce Rosie’s pain killers, so I am really not sure that her magnetic collar is working at all. It may be going back!
