Sunday 23rd September 2018

We woke up to more rain. At least it is good for the garden. Ellie had a very short walk, in fact Mal just took her in the field opposite, she was more than happy with that and was soaked when she came home!

We went to Lou and Rhys’s for lunch and River and Maddie were there too. We had a lovely lunch and the plan was to dog walk but it was too wet. Oscar was away with school at a PGL and Josie went off to a party.

Saturday 22nd September 2018

We went for a nice long walk with Ellie, even jogged a bit along the paths by the river (keeping up the cardio vascular exercise!), actually it’s because Ellie sniffs and if we jog she runs with us and keeps up!

We also met Ronald with his one eyed dog, who now has his Elizabethan collar off and he looks a little brighter.

So very sad to hear that Chas Hodges died this morning (Chas and Dave). I know they cancelled a few concerts recently but he seemed to have recovered from his cancer. In fact we went to see them in December in Margate. I think they were the only people who lifted the roof at Margate Winter gardens with their rendition of “Dahn to Margit”.

RIP Chas.

Tris and Violet wanted to go to Howletts in the afternoon. They didn’t arrive from London until 3, so we met them at the zoo. It rained all the time we were there but surprisingly a lot of the animals were outside.

Arina was just chillin’ on some tyres (in the rain). I have to say, I love this picture of her, sums her up quite nicely.

We also managed to see the baby elephant, thank goodness as we had told Violet all about him.

They came back to our house later to dry out! Violet and I watched Strictly together. She told me how she met Claudia Winkleman and that one of the contestants was her mums best friend. All true, long story!

Friday 21st September 2018

It was extremely windy the previous night and so it was a good idea to go to the orchards. Ellie likes running around there chasing rabbits and also she loves apples as much as I do and we share the windfalls as we walk. As it had been windy there were plenty of fresh apples on the ground! The pickers were there in the next orchard, so they are in the middle of harvesting. They really are so delicious and juicy.  The sad part is the amount they discard because they are the wrong shape or size!  I know that the supermarkets buy up whole orchards. There are also a lot of locals advertising free apples that have fallen in the winds. It’s nice that people around here share. Looks as though I’ll be making apple crumble for Sunday!

Mal brought more vegetables from the allotment so I made some vegetable soup for lunch. I add lentils and orzo too.

In the afternoon I had my health check at the doctors. They tend to look after you when you are over 65! It’s the first cholesterol check I have ever had.

For dinner we had sea bass (whole sea bass on offer at £2.52 each at Tesco), followed by figs, we could have been back in Cyprus! We always ate a lot of sea bass there and figs when they were in season.

Thursday 20th September 2018

We were up fairly early and so took Ellie down to Stone Bay. She does love it down there. We have to be off the beach by 10am but at the end of September we will have freedom of the beaches again!

Mal washed the car as soon as we arrived home as I had previously parked it under a tree and all the pollen had covered the car.

Later I went to meet Rhys at Westwood and we had lunch together. It really is nice meeting him and spending time with him.

Wednesday 19th September 2018

Our morning walks seem to take longer and longer. This morning we chatted to a guy named Ronald as his elderly dog has just had his eye removed, then he proceeded to tell us that he had lived here for 20 years, married to a German lady etc etc. If anyone is lonely, I suggest you get a dog!! Everyone stops to talk. There seems no such thing as a short dog walk, not around Sandwich anyway!

We had a Red Hatters meeting at The Crispin this time. At least for once I could walk to it. We even had an honorary member, Lin’s dog Lily!

We all enjoyed the food and tried to plan some events in the future.

Pam (the licensee ) even asked if she could take a photo to put on the pub’s website!

Tuesday 18th September 2018

Mal still had a couple of students to work with and so I went to Calcott to pay the deposits for our Demelza Christmas meal. On the way I stopped at the garden centre and bought some pansies and viola and also a really nice pot. I think I will find some heathers to put in that.

Mal went to the allotment in the afternoon and then to his “Old Geezers” night at the Crispin.

Monday 17th September 2018

Demelza day and we had a lot of students in. We also have a sale on all week. Today was men’s goods, buy one and get another for 1p!  Very good but it got a little confusing putting it through the till. Jack was back from holiday and our new assistant manager, Kerry, started. She is very nice.
