Saturday 24th March 2018

I dropped Mal off in Sandwich at the house and I had to go shopping. I was just taking the food back to Preston and Rhys called to ask if I could look after the littlies for a couple of hours in the afternoon. No prob;em so back to Sandwich for a while and then over to Beltinge.

Josie, Ollie, Oscar and I went for a walk along the beach with the dogs.Ellie was running in and out of the sea. Next thing she was rolling in a dead bird and next a dead fish, she really is quite disgusting. From there, when Lou was home, I went back to Sandwich and Mal was still decorating. I did a bit of filling holes in the walls and then we came back to Preston and I had to bath Ellie as she stank.

We were up early, Ellie walked and then up to Wickes to buy a new water butt. The old one was some of the problem of the rotten decking. More paint to buy and we returned one unopened where we had overestimated. That’s fine I had the receipt and that would come off the new things we had bought. When I checked the new receipt, she hadn’t refunded enough money!! I’ve no idea what happens to people who never check their receipts. I used to think this was only in Cyprus.

Lou and Rhys arrived for the day to help us. Rhys did more in the garden, pressure jetting the decking that is left in situ while Lou did masses of gloss painting. She is much better than me and doesn’t groan when she has been crawling on the floor for the skirting boards like I do. I had also been using trade woodwork matt paint that was highly recommended and it was useless so we bought gloss. Even Steve , the previous night, said he had stopped using it as it was awful and he used to teach decorators.

We watched the England game in the evening.

Over to the Sandwich house and Rhys and Lou propped up some of the sagging decking and levelled some of the ground where timbers were rotten and laid the turfs. They then filled cars up with rotten wood and things for dump runs! We’d never be able to do all this without them.

Mal and I painted .

In the evening we met Shirley and Steve and went to The Bell in Minster…it has closed down!! So instead we went to the New Inn.

I had monkfish which was very good. I think the others enjoyed their food too. All was well until the bill came! They had overcharged us for THREE drinks. We told the waitress and she laughed and then just went away to alter it. We got the impression that she thought we wouldn’t notice.She lost her tip!

Rhys wants to do more on the garden tomorrow so Mal and I went to buy some Top soil, wooden stakes and turf. We looked it up and Wickes was the cheapest place for top soil. It was £2 a bag there. When we arrived we couldn’t find any even though according to the internet they had 27 there in stock. They had some there £5 a bag, the same size. We asked one of the assistants. No they only had the £5 one (same stuff!) We showed her on the phone, 27 in stock. It was very much like the Cyprus shrug then….in other words she couldn’t care less so we asked her to explain why the internet said they had some and she was saying they hadn’t.

So, we asked for the Manager. She replied that the Manager wasn’t in today. OK, whoever was in charge. We waited and waited and finally a girl came out and asked what the problem was. We told her and very begrudgingly she agreed we could have them for £2 a bag! It all seemed a bit of a con to us. At least we now have the top soil, turf and posts. That will keep Rhys going for a while. I can’t say it did my work horse car much good. There was a lot of weight in it.

Mal then continued with the painting and I went to collect Ellie and clean the car out and collect some lunch. More painting for the rest of the afternoon.

In the evening we watched Zoe Ball with her fund raising bike ride. I know I sat and cried all the way through it but had to watch it when she had made such a tremendous effort to raise awareness for suicide. Bless her.

We went over to the house and Lou and Rhys came too. The previous tenant (maybe) had left the loft full! We obviously hadn’t noticed before so Lou and Rhys emptied everything out. A pile for the charity shop, a complete car load which Lou took to the tip and several more piles to be sorted. They also pulled up half of the decking in the garden. A lot of that was rotten where a water butt overflowed all over it. We are going to level and turf that side. Mal’s brother Steve and his wife Shirley are staying in a caravan in Birchington and asked us over for lunch. Afterwards they came over to see the house, so in fact we got very little work done.

I was at Demelza. The morning was very slow. There is a new British Heart Foundation charity shop now open in the main high street and I think a lot of customers are going there. The only thing is that their prices seem to be higher than ours.

I was really cold in the shop, the coldest I have ever been and then Jack discovered that when Petro turned the heater on in the morning, he had turned it on to cooling and not heat! No wonder the shop was cold.

We took Ellie across the fields. It was OK on the way there but coming back the wind was bitter. I’m glad we didn’t decide on a longer walk.

Then over to Sandwich and we both painted. I was doing woodwork. I can’t say I like crawling around skirting boards. Not my favourite occupation but someone has to do it!

Early evening we went out for another birthday meal for Mal with Lou, Rhys and the littlies. We went to Chom Chom in Canterbury. It was very quiet in there. Maybe everyone stayed home because of the snow.

We had a lovely time.
