Sunday 9th September 2018

Today is the day Julie (my niece) and her friends are running the Great North Run. I can’t wait to see their full costumes as crayons. They already have their nails painted.

I know it will be a very emotional day for Julie as they are raising money for Headway in Torin’s memory.

All dressed up and ready to go.

We even saw them on TV at approximately 4 minutes to 11! And again later.

They did it and raised £1,767 so far!

Mal and I went to Rhys’s for lunch. Lou cooked us a lovely meal. It was Tariq’s last day of his holidays so now down to Plymouth for ship training. River was there too. He starts back at Uni in a couple of weeks.

Saturday 8th September 2018

I am so pleased to see so many donations for my niece Julie and the “crayons” who are doing the Great North Run tomorrow.  Torin would be so very proud. They are planning on being interviewed on TV, they will be easy to spot. I have had a sneak preview of their costumes!

Mal and I took Ellie out for a walk across the fields and then along the river.

We walked through the town on the way back so that we could buy tickets for Pulse, who are a tribute Pink Floyd band. This is another concert that is on in Sandwich at St Mary’s church, so a lovely venue.

Friday 7th September 2018

A nice sunny day again and so we were going to make the most of it and drove to Stone Bay with Ellie. Dogs are allowed on that beach up to 10am and even so there were very few people on the beach.  One of the roads in Broadstairs had been closed down and so it wasn’t the easiest place to get to but well worth the effort.

We dropped Ellie off at home and then went out for lunch. We wanted to check out places in Walmer but we weren’t sure whether they were all dog friendly.

We had lunch of Jerk Chicken and goat stew in a cafe along the sea front. The food could have been spicier but a very quirky little place.

We then walked along the sea front near to Deal castle as they had a food and drink festival on.

Thought for the Day – “Oh and that little voice inside that we call intuition? That’s your soul. Trust it!”

Out with Ellie and then Mal designed a poster for our Demelza Christmas party! He can do it in a fraction of the time I would take!

I  bussed into Canterbury in the afternoon and took the posters and forms into Demelza. Jack was surprised to see me, or rather that I had organised it so quickly. He is going on holiday on Saturday so I wanted to get it there before he left. Hilary was working today, so she chose her meal and gave me her deposit. Another one coming!

Thought for the Day – “If you can sit quietly after difficult news, if in financial downturns you remain perfectly calm, if you can see neighbours travel to fantastic places without a twinge of jealousy, if you can happily eat whatever is put on your plate and fall asleep after a day of running around without a drink or a pill………if you can always find contentment just where you are, you are probably a dog!” ~ Jack Kornfield

Wednesday 5th September 2018

We woke up to drizzle. A walk with Ellie and then we went shopping. Mainly looking for carpet. It’s a long while since we have bought a carpet in the UK and it now seems the company don’t fit them but sub contractors.  Three carpet shops do it the same. We would rather find one who does everything, if that is possible.

I have provisionally booked our Demelza Christmas Dinner, just need to do a poster and forms to fill in their menu choices for the rest of the volunteers and staff. It IS going to happen this Christmas! If no one else, there will be Jack, Heather, Linda and I!!

Tuesday 4th September 2018

Ramsgate Red Hatters Reinvented arranged a day out to Downton Abbey, well actually it is Highclere Castle. We were all looking forward to a nice day out until Rosemary and I heard we would be picked up at Minster at 6am!! It was one of those coach trips where we were on a feeder coach and we had to go all round the houses picking everyone up. So, in all it took 5 hours to get there!

I have to say people were fascinated seeing us in our Hatters gear. We even met another Red Hatter from Torquay! Many people stopped to talk to us. and I feel there may be a few new recruits in the offing.

We toured the castle and then went around their Egyptian Exhibition which was really interesting. In between we had our lunch. For a touristy place like that, I have to say it was a good meal.  It was such a lovely sunny afternoon that we sat in the grounds and all had a cream tea. It was nice apart from the many wasps after our jam!

We had a really nice day with a lot of laughs even if it was a lot of travelling.
Once I was home I went on to Facebook only to discover that one of us Hatters, Jean, had died that very morning. She had been too ill to come to the last two meetings and on the journey home Jackie and I planned a visit to the hospice to see her on Friday. Sadly not to be. She will be missed so much, really the life and soul in spite of being 82 and having been in a lot of pain for many months. She always made a point of asking me exactly how I was all the time since I lost Torin and she totally understood.
Rest In Peace, pain free, our one and only Duchess.

Monday 3rd September 2018

Demelza Day. Heather was not in as she had a bowls match. Jack and I had a chat and I have offered to organise the Christmas meal this year. Last year everyone was given a choice of dates and no one could agree. My idea is I set the date and if you can come, you come and if not, then hard luck! It is far enough ahead that people can book the date in their diaries.

Talking of diaries I had to buy one for 2019 as we are getting dates to put into it. Demelza Christmas cards will be in tomorrow!

I heard today that Nasons, a large department store in Canterbury which has been there for over 100 years, is now closing down. Such a shame.

Mal had dinner ready when I arrived home.

Thought for the Day – “You are always given the opportunity to make someone feel appreciated. It makes a world of difference to someone who feels empty or ignored. When it comes to kindness, nothing is ever small.” ~ Dodinsky
