Fun at the beach before it became too hot to run around.

What creatures of habit we are. Into Atakara on the way home to buy our freshly baked olive bread. I think one morning they will realise that it is me who is treading the sand in over their nice clean floor. I do try and get it all off my sandals!

Swimming in the pool and then we had a couple of hours on the web cam. First Scarlet and Jack called and a little later Violet . Violet had been to Broadstairs Folk Festival but the thing she wanted to see had been rained off!

There is a lot going on in the skies at the moment. The Perseid Metoer show which is now at its  peak (until 13th). However tonight’s Supermoon (Perigee moon) won’t help you seeing them at all. The moon is bigger and brighter than it has been for 20 years.  You certainly don’t need  a torch outside tonight!!

Down to the beach again.  Little by little we are getting Ellie used to the sea by throwing her ball in but then she waits until it comes back into the shore! She loves digging in the sand and getting messy anyway.

We stopped at Atakara for our just baked olive bread, still on the cooling rack! And of course Cyprus Today. I have to say well done to the Turkish Army for adapting Peace Beach for handicapped people – a small article mid paper. The paper gets worse each week. People’s homes being auctioned off and they don’t even report on it. The new buyer is allegedly even asking the home owners for rent! Evidently that is not newsworthy.

They even publish a letter saying the buyers should have checked their contracts are registered at the land registry so that any mortgages put on the land will have to be registered after their contract.  Sorry Mr Letter writer isn’t that the lawyers job?

So sad to hear from Lena in the afternoon that the shepherd’s dog “Ginger” is dead. She has seen her in the ravine. The sheep are kept just at the beginning of the ravine. She doesn’t know whether it has been poisoned or knocked down by a car and just thrown into the ravine, as they do here. No comments on that one. Of course I called David and Kenny straight away, just in case. I think we all gave that poor dog biscuits as I have only ever seen the shepherd giving her and her puppies stale bread.  We will miss her as she always wagged her tail and came to see us whenever we walked past but she did have a tendency to sit in the middle of the road. Who knows what happened.

In the evening we went to The Black Olive to listen to the music played by Ed  and  Hannah. Lena and Willy were also there so we chatted to them. They live just across the road but we rarely get to chat!  Good music and good food.

Our walk was too much in the humidity yesterday so just to be on the safe side, we headed for the beach. Ellie had much more fun today. She even had a friend to play with.

Sad news again from KTW, another turtle nest lost…………………..

“No excavations/releases tonight. The Nest at Rosy’s Beach was excavated this morning it was a Logger nest and 20 days late. This nest of 84 eggs had been washed many times by the tides. Results unfertilised/rotten 53 & dead in shells 31. Any nests here in future will be moved to Karsiyaka for protection, we can’t risk this happening again.”

I have just ordered my Remembrance Poppy from the Tower of London. Of course in remembrance of my grandfather who was killed in World War 1. I understand 100,000 have been sold already.

We couldn’t believe all the clouds in the sky when we were up early and also half way round our walk, just how humid it was. We gave Ellie some water while we were out and then when we were home she just lay on the floor panting. Mal and I were both dripping too so we put the air con on, something we rarely do during the day. If this humidity stays, it will be shorter walks. Very weird weather for August.

Low cloud around our house

I had a text from Rhys, just like his mum. There is a  coupon in the paper today for £5 of fruit of vegetables from Morrions. The paper cost 40p. He sent three of the older boys in twice, so they now have £30 worth and I believe it is in tomorrows paper again!

In the evening we went down to Marie’s Tapas Bar. We were the only ones eating in there. In fact there were only two other people in the bar. Well, the tapas, all home made by Marie, were delicious, full of garlic! If you are not sure what to have Marie will help you out. She did with us and we ate far too much! She also makes a good brandy sour. It is handy for us because it is within walking distance but all uphill on the way back.

We took Ellie out,  again as the sun was rising.

Later we drove into Girne. We had to pay the electricity bill at Kibtek. We usually pay it at the bank but the bill is in the meter box along with all the wasps. Yes they are still there and very cross! From there we paid Multimax. They are moving offices very soon. Phew it was hot in Girne, not our favourite place in the summer. Next my car insurance which has reduced in price now that Steve no longer uses Universal. That’s good news. We did consider having our lunch out. I wanted to go to Old Silver. Their garden  “roof” fascinates me! They hadn’t opened so we decided to drive home, a swim in the pool and then some lunch at home. Much cooler. We’ll go another day.

Today from Karsiyaka Turtle Watch………………………..

“Nest ‘Abi’ has started to hatch so excavation tonight meeting at ‘The Turtle Shack’, Guzelyali Beach for 6.30pm. (in the car park of Guzelyali Fish Restaurant)  “

Latest update from KTW (at about 3.30pm Cyprus time)………..

“IMPORTANT – our nest Abi, which was due for excavation tonight had other ideas. The hatchlings have decided to come out this afternoon and, therefore, the nest is being excavated just now. This means that there will only be a release tonight, not an excavation as we had hoped for. However, you are guaranteed to see some hatchlings as there are already 3 which have come out the nest this afternoon and hopefully more once the full excavation is complete. So the release will be about 8.15 tonight, as soon as the sun goes down and it starts to get dark. If you would like to join us come down for about 8 and help these hatchlings on their journey into the sea.”

To the beach…..

The tide was high and quite noisy so Ellie wasn’t impressed. I don’t know what has happened before we had her that makes her so frightened.

We took Ellie to the mountains . She was fine but after a while decided to make a run for it towards a dead sheep that had been dumped. She had been following the smell the minute we arrived but I wouldn’t let her near it. More training needed! She gets the scent of something, especially disgusting smells and she just blocks everything else out of her brain. We don’t know how long she was out on the streets probably scavenging before we took her in.

For the last few days I have heard a Potter wasp building his pot but I couldn’t find where it was. It kept buzzing again this morning. I managed to find it under one of our wooden chairs which I have now taken outside to remove the pot. Mr Potter keeps backwards and forwards not being able to make out where it has gone! These are quite harmless wasps if you don’t handle them, unlike the ones we still have in our meter box. I have walked into a Potter once and ended up with some of his mud on my forehead!

Good news from Karsiyaka Turtle Watch….
“Nest excavation tonight ……….’Dagmar’ has hatched!
Meeting at ‘The Turtle Shack’ beside Guzelyali Fish Restaurant (usual place) at 6.30pm, release to the sea will be as soon as dark. No booking required, donations always welcome.”

If you haven’t seen the turtles, then do go along.Seeing them trotting down to the sea is a ‘must do’ once in your life! We are just so privileged to live so close to one of  their nesting beaches and also to have seen so many hatching from their nests and also being released into the sea.

Sol was marching with the air cadets in Folkestone, in front of Prince Harry for the wreath laying and commemoration  of World War 1!  Sol lost his great great grandad, my dads father in the trenches.
