Swedish tradition for ‘pink Thursday’ is “for girls, dressed as witches wearing head scarves and long skirts, go from door to door with a coffee pot which they expect to get filled with small change or sweets. Known as Easter crones or Easter witches, they recall the old superstition in Sweden that Easter was the time when the witches flew to the devil on the “Blue Mountain”, a belief which, even in the 18th century, could still mean capital punishment for those who were denounced. The ‘witches’ also carry a broom and wear two big circles of blush on their cheeks and drawn on freckles.”
Well, we were unaware of this until our very own witch called on us. She brought us an Easter egg! It is lovely discovering different Cypriot traditions and equally so discovering Swedish traditions. Thank you Margaretha!
The grandchildren from Cardiff came on the web cam in the evening to thank us for their Easter eggs. It was decided to let them have them early as they are going to Cornwall for Easter and Rhys said they would melt in the car……I think he is rubbing it in how hot it is in the UK and how different it is here. Early evening it was 15 degrees here and raining, at times torrential and we even lit the log burner!
