Out with the dogs and everyone is up early and organising. The farmers are out planting winter cabbage and cauliflowers and gathering in the hay. Preston Court is getting ready for a wedding today. It’s a lovely place and the couples actually get married on the island. Today they have set a bar up in their adjacent field. Wow, it’s all happening in Preston today but what a lovely day for a wedding. AND everywhere we walk there are plums on the trees. These are the small “wild” plums and they are so sweet.

 

Late morning we went into Ramsgate where there was supposed to be their festival on. When we spoke to someone who was handing out leaflets we were told nothing could begin until “the council” gave them permission! What on a Saturday? He also asked us if we would volunteer another year as they were short of people, yes, it certainly seemed like it.

So we wandered round and stopped by the harbour for a drink and then came home and sat in the garden!

Thankfully Roddy isn’t scratching as much. Rhys phoned in the afternoon to see how he was. Of course we told him he was fine, well, I’m not spoiling his holiday, that can wait until they get back and hopefully by that time he will be all better. They are enjoying themselves anyway which is the main thing.

Today, as members of English Heritage, we thought of visiting Dover Castle again. Thank goodness we didn’t.It is chaos around Dover!

Poor Roddy, still scratching. We took the dogs for a walk around Wingham and a game of ball in Elgar’s field.

Just after we arrived home we had a phone call to ask where our house is as a courier had a package for us. Every house in this road has a name so it is difficult to find us. Well, the package was my new passport, which I ordered on Monday! I was stunned that it arrived so quickly and later in the day my old cancelled passport arrived by Royal Mail. Mal has now done his online too. It is so easy and quick.

In the afternoon we took Roddy to his vets. The vet said he seems to have a lot of allergies and a good thing we took him back or he may have scratched his fur away. He already has a bit that is bald. He gave him a steroid injection and some steroid tablets to be taken for 7 days. We took both dogs with us and so took them to Reculver Country Park before coming home. Ellie seen jumping in the high grass!

Villa in Cyprus for sale

We were up early again to avoid the heat. On the way to the fields we saw this cat who attacks dogs! It looks so innocent just sitting there on the post.

We worked on the front garden in the afternoon. Poor Roddy was still scratching and so we have made an appointment at his vets. They can’t see him until tomorrow afternoon.

In the evening we went to have dinner at a new restaurant in Ramsgate , The Waterfront. We had a walk along the seafront first. There used to be Pleasureama which burnt down in 1998 and it has been left ever since then. The owner wanted to build houses, the authorities said no. In 2001 it was compulsory purchased and it seems they have been trying to get permission to build there ever since. The latest we have heard is 105 flats and a Wetherspoons. Meanwhile there is just boarding around the site but to brighten it up, a lot of paintings.

As usual, I don’t like paying full price if I can get things cheaper and this was a Groupon deal at the Waterfront. It was £22 for a two course meal and we had a 20% off voucher for that!! I really can’t believe how good it was. Our meals were perfect and the chef even came out to talk to us and ask how we enjoyed it. He said he didn’t like having his picture taken! I had roasted sea bass, I have never had it roasted before. Mal had a cheese board at the end which had so much cheese on it! He was very happy as he tends to judge places by their cheese board(!) They also had one of his favourite beers Ghost Ship on tap. I really shouldn’t mention that he didn’t consume much of the first pint as he managed to move his menu and knock it all over the tablecloth! We also chatted to a really nice couple at the next table so it was a really nice evening. Mal told them not to order the cheese board as they could have half of his. Ha ha. Unusually for Mal he couldn’t finish it all, so Ellie and Roddy benefited from that when we arrived home. I always have a couple of zip lock bags in my handbag!

News from Karsiyaka Turtle Watch today, for anyone in north Cyprus who wants to see these little miracles….

“Wednesday 20 July : We’ll be releasing a number of hatchlings tonight at Guzelyali. Please meet at The Turtle Shack at 7.45 to release at dusk.
Photos very welcome but please remember, no FLASH as it can damage their eyes!” 

We were out walking the dogs by 6am to make sure it wasn’t too hot for them. All the cabbages have been planted in one of the fields, elsewhere there is a lot of harvesting going on.

I then went into Canterbury shopping and Mal waited in for the man from Southern Water. We are paying a ridiculous amount for our water bill and seeing as we are often away and there are only two of us, we have asked to them to install a meter. This “argument” has been ongoing for months. No they can’t put one here for this property. The house is obviously extremely old and they say we have a joint supply with next door and every other excuse they can think of. We have since spoken to the man who used to own this house. He agrees there is no joint supply and showed us where the stopcock was on the road (we already knew that ) and then showed us where the water comes into the house. Mal called the water people again. “No, we have been out to your house 3 times and it can’t be done.” This time Mal asked that it be put it in writing so that he can take it to his solicitor to take to court. Oh, are we available Wednesday 20th, he will be round just to check again!!! Sure enough he called while I was out. Mal saw him and oh yes, they can put a meter in!! What is wrong with these people?!

On a more positive note with my online passport application , they have approved the photo Mal took, they have received my old passport and all systems go. How easy was that, the whole thing done online, only the old passport to be  returned, and then they cancel and return to you.

Poor Roddy is scratching away again today so I am going to have to bath him again tomorrow.

A much later walk in the evening when it had cooled down a bit. We have a portable air con and so have been using that in the house.

A hot morning so we were out early with the two dogs, likewise a lot of other dog walkers! The forecast says it will reach 33 degrees today.

Mal wasn’t at the allotment very long but did bring back broad beans, gooseberries and potatoes.

The hot weather brings bugs and Roddy suffers when he gets fleas but we have some shampoo that the vet gave him. He was scratching and so we had to bath him and leave the shampoo on for five minutes then thoroughly wash it off.  He seems to be scratching even more after the shampoo! Ellie had her flea treatment on Monday. The trouble is taking them round the fields and where the animals are.

We spent the afternoon in the garden.

For the first time I have renewed my passport online. You can take your own photo and fill the form in online and the only thing to then do is to post your old passport back. So easy (I hope!) We are waiting to see that this is OK before applying for Mal’s passport. I must have one of the last passports to not have eye recognition. Maybe I can go through the shorter queues now.

Lou and Rhys and family have left for Spain and it looks as though the temperature there is the same as the UK today!

It was rather a warm walk, We came back to a red admiral sitting on the wall sunning himself.

We thought we would have a quiet afternoon in the garden. No chance, they were having new windows fitted next door so a lot of banging was going on. Lovely!

Later I went to Fat Club and I have managed to lose another one and a half pounds, maybe because I only had a thin summer dress on…ha ha! I have made quite a few friends there, so it is quite an enjoyable evening. Even better I have had 10 weeks with a weight loss and so I didn’t have to pay tonight!

This is Wenderton Farm, just down the road from us. They are collecting their harvest of black currants and then they are sent to Somerset where they have a contract and they all go into Ribena!

We took Ellie and Roddy for a very long walk over the fields. Roddy is very good off the lead, I think he worries he is going to lose us!

It was very humid and so they both went and layed in some shade in the garden when we were back home.
I received this from Karsiyaka Turtle Watch this morning, my nest is hatching!!:

“Maggie” started hatching last night, we spent some time with the nest this morning and will be excavating tonight 🙂
I know you’re not here right now, and although we going to use your nest as a training nest for our new volunteers, hence it won’t be a ‘public’ excavation as such, is there anyone here you would like ” as a witness’ for you? 🙂
I will of course send you an accounting of numbers of eggs etc, and hopefully a couple of photos, but possibly not until morning as we’re not planning to release until after dark …. 8 – 8.30.

What a shame that I am not there but it was more about the donation as I have seen the turtles many times. It truly is magical. I just hope one or two from my nest may survive. So few do survive, hence the excavating of the nests to give as many as possible a fair chance. However I have heard from Margaretha and she is going in my place.It will be so good not being a public excavation.
