Bargain for the Day – 20% off swimwear and beachwear.

It wasn’t as windy and the sun was out so we walked to the shops as Mal decided he needs some thin trousers for Poland, that zip off for shorts as we are only taking hand luggage (Ryanair= £25 each case, each way!) Of course he has pairs of these but they are all in Cyprus, so a quick visit to TKMaxx and he found just what he was looking for. Good for him as he hates shopping! We walked back across the fields.

In the afternoon my Sainsbury’s order was delivered and what a nice man the delivery man was. So obliging. I have to say the way I am treated in supermarkets in North Cyprus is very different to the UK.  A good deal too this home delivery with £15 off! He was also early but rang first, I guess he wanted to get home to watch the football!

Fresh salmon, asparagus and Jersey potatoes for dinner and Kent strawberries for pud…yummy!

Bargain gift – Mountain Boarding!

It was sooo windy but I managed to walk to Westwood. I had bought some sandals but have only worn them three times and noticed stitching coming undone. I didn’t have the receipt but took them back and I was given a new pair, no arguments nothing, just profuse apologies. Mmmm, a little different to North Cyprus!

Mal worked all day.

I now have the new curtains up in the living room.

We watched the football in the evening. I think the result, Germany winning, was inevitable.

Thought for the Day ……..

Thursday 21st June 2012

If you buy the Telegraph on Saturday you can get 2 for 1 entry to National Trust. Plus a code for free delivery at MandM Direct, who sell clothes and shoes at already discounted prices.

Rain during the night and rain when we got up.  It looks as though North Cyprus may be having two days of rain too, according to the forecast.

In the evening Shirley and Steve asked us if we would like to join them for a meal out at a Russian restaurant  in Ramsgate. Of course we said yes, always game for something local that is a bit different! It’s a nice restaurant and it surprised us that there were only two other people dining the whole time we were in there. The guy who owns it comes from Lithuania, and our geography failing all four of us, he drew us a map so we could see exactly where it is! There were also TV’s in there and we were asked whether we wanted music or football, of course we chose the football!

I thought the food was very good and the beetroot soup I had was excellent. I chose Cabbage rolls for my main but they only had half a portion which was enough, seeing as I was having soup first. Shirley is a vegetarian and didn’t fair so well with her choices. Mal wished he had chosen the wild boar that Steve had instead of the venison he ordered. (Brothers!)  The prices were really reasonable (£2.50 for beetroot soup.)   We had read up about the restaurant on Trip Advisor before going and everyone recommends the Honey Cake for desert (which wasn’t on the menu). We all ordered it. The portions were huge and Shirley and I couldn’t finish ours. It was delicious but a bit of a shock when the bill came and it was £6 a portion comparing the other prices on the menu. My desert cost more than the other two courses put together! Well worth a visit if you are ever in Ramsgate!

We moved on from there for drinks at The Churchill Tavern. Mal and Steve do like their real ales!  The picture taken here…I think they had too many beers!

A very good evening. Thank you Shirley and Steve, especially Shirley who drove!

Wednesday 20th June 2012

There is an offer on with Sainsbury’s  at the moment, £15 off an online order, with a code, so I am going to do that and it will save me carrying groceries for a while!

Last night Prince William was on the local news. He had been to Port Lympne, where the Aspinall Foundation is, to see three endangered black rhinos that are being transported to  Tanzania.  They were transported from Manston (about two miles from where we are). You  can read all about it here.

When we lived in this area I had a season tciket for Howletts and Port Lympne and spent many hours there with the grandchildren.

I went for a walk in the morning as it was such a nice day. It looks as though Torin has made good use of his day off  too ….fishing!

Torin and 33 pound "Ugly Betty"!

Tuesday 19th June 2012

Bargain – Garden Relaxer Chair – you don’t get bargains like this in North Cyprus! I guess it is because there has been a lot of rain in the UK and they now have to get rid of them! Now you know England is going to get through to the “Quarters”, so you can now order your Reduced price England shirt! Less than half price now!

It was a really nice day and I walked to the shops looking for inspiration for birthday presents for grandchildren and then caught the bus back and then I sat in the garden. I am better keeping out of Mal’s way when he is marking as I tend to talk to him when he is in the middle of doing something!

We watched the England game in the evening. Mal did nothing but groan during the first half. Thankfully Rooney scored and we are in the last eight!

Sunday 17th June 2012

Bargain – 3 tier steamer for less than half price.

Father’s day,  so I made Mal breakfast in bed and he opened his presents and cards. After breakfast we went off to Broadstairs for the Dickens Festival.

A bit of background info:

“Charles Dickens visited Broadstairs in Kent regularly from 1837 until 1859 and immortalised the town as”Our English Watering Place”.

In 1937, to commemorate the centenary of the author’s first visit, Gladys Waterer, the then owner of Dickens House, conceived the idea of putting on a production of David Copperfield and of having people about the town in Victorian dress to publicise it. Thus the festival was born and, with the exception of the years of World War 2, has been held annually in the third week of June ever since.”

It is always good and everyone gets in the swing of it. There was an art exhibition, loads of marquees with crafts and food for sale. We wandered around and then couldn’t resist cheesy chips by the sea! I loved the idea of chips in buckets (see picture), I bet the grandkids would love that! I sat with my chips half covered as the seagulls were hovering around us again! We then went into the Tartar Frigate for a beer or wine in my case. Mal loves that pub as they do masses of real ales!

We then went back to Victoria Gardens (still along the sea front) and settled in our deck chairs for the “cricket match”. Queen Victoria was there! It was the funniest cricket match I have watched with the Dickensians winning and then being presented with their medals by Queen Vic! We then went and had an Italian ice cream and back home. What a lovely way to spend a Sunday.

We rang the boys in Cardiff in the evening and they had a good day too going out for a long walk and spoiling their dad.
