We were beginning to think our house gekko had left and then he came out on to the kitchen wall this morning, squeaking away.

It is really not the weather to be re-laying the terrace but little choice as Torin is only here for a week It was blowing a gale and then the rain came down! David said the weather changed dramatically when we arrived!! We were all up early waiting for the weather to change.

Torin did manage to make a start and Mal and I went on the hunt for bags of sand and cement as two yapis have run out of it. We went to Marshalls first and he said it was 47tl a bag…….we have been paying 10tl. Evidently his is “superior quality”!!  The yapi the other side of the road in Karaoğlanoğlu had some but his was 12tl. That was good enough!

The new slabs we bought started cracking as well, so Mal and I had to go on another mission to look for new ones. One yapi told us he stopped stocking them because he was getting so many complaints because they now make them with plaster!!!! He said, you lay 10 and 5 will crack. Not only that the new ones Torin measured, one side is 25mm and the other is 45mm and you are supposed to lay them flat?? It is now coming back to me, some of the reasons we left. Frankly they have low standards and could we get our money back for shoddy goods?   Don’t make me laugh!!

I think we visited every yapi for miles around until a very kind soul told us to go to the yapi after the square in Karsiyaka. That is where the guy that makes them lives, the place with huge tiles along the main road but you have to go to the yapi to get them. Anyway, he who makes them said he would follow us home in his van to save putting them in the car. We said it was OK even though we had another 8 bags of sand and cement in the back. He insisted, so followed us back and he ended up smashing SIX just bringing them back. So we had to follow him all the way back to Karsiyaka to his house to get 6 replacements. Well, what a waste of time.  Torin’s verdict trying to lay them, they are even worse.

Thankfully he did manage to finish

Just the pointing to do now! He was so tired he didn’t want to go out so we phoned for a pizza!

Torin and Mal went off to get more sand and cement as the yapi they bought it at had run out! Still waiting for the replacement slabs. They will ring us when they are in! Meanwhile Torin is continuing but managed to hammer his finger…ouch!  A problem today because it is windy and so loads of dust from the sand and cement. But it is progressing!

There are beautiful clouds around today. I have been sitting on our terrace letting them float by.

Late afternoon Mal and I drove down to the yapi and the slabs were there. He hadn’t phoned us to tell us as promised!

It was really windy when we woke up. A good thing we covered up the “hole” in the terrace and also moved the sand and cement under cover as it had rained! I think that is the first rain here for months.

Day 3 and they are both still hard at it while I do the gardening! In fact working and collecting more sand and cement took them up to 4.30. Not good in the heat.

After they stopped Ali (from Acmenya) came up with the replacement car. Yes they gave me the wrong one as usual when we arrived. We swapped the cars over. We did tell him we were going to clean the boot out as we had cement in it and he said it was no problem they would do it. BUT they didn’t give me updated paper work so I will have to go down there tomorrow and also to return the baby seat they have left in the boot! One of these days they will get it right.

Torin arranged to go out for dinner with Tracey as it was her last night so Mal and I went for a quick meal at Fast Food in Alsancak as he was going to use the car. Mal really wanted pide and although they have an entire page of them in the menu, they didn’t have any! They used to be nice, so that was a disappointment.  We both wished we had eaten somewhere else!

Torin was home before 10, he said he was tired! It’s hard work in the sun!

Day 2 for the swimming pool terrace and Torin decided he would limit the Efes at night  while he is working on the terrace! But he was out there again bright and early. It was hotter than the previous day so sensibly he stopped at the hottest part of the day and they went off to order some new tiles and some sand and cement. Mal did a lot of the cleaning the tiles, getting all the old cement off them. Torin’s hands have a lot of blisters and Mal also has a couple and neither of them want to wear gloves!

Torin now has an very ouchy finger!

We asked him where he wanted to go for dinner and his reply was “anywhere where I can eat a lot of meat”, so we went to Silver Rocks and they both had mixed kebab which was huge! I had a lovely sea bass. I much prefer fish to meat.

Torin drove tonight and so I had my first brandy sour. I always think of my friend Sue, who sadly passed away in January. The first time we met, I introduced her to brandy sours and we got totally wrecked and she always blamed me whenever she had them. Bless her.  I offer a toast to her.

Back home and we sat under the terrace watching lightning flashing around the sky.

There’s nothing like waking up to this view! It was even better years ago before all the houses and the Merit hotels along the coast line! That’s progress!

Torin spent until 2pm working on the pool terrace and then it was so hot so he had a break and we went and ate at Blue Song. We have never had a bad meal there so it was a safe bet and right next to the sea so nice and cool. We had a very nice meal. Later he was back to work.

Tracey, a friend of Torin’s, is on holiday in Karsiyaka at the moment and so she came round for a visit in the evening. I think Torin was a bit tired by then!!

Travelling to Cyprus day!

Not much to be said, same old boring journey with Pegasus and Torin in shock as how rude the attendants on the plane can be!

We couldn’t find our hire car at the airport and had to ring Acmenya. He was a bit late but at least arrived. Again, he gave me the wrong car and the car we travelled back from the airport in had a rattle that was quite concerning and it was losing power. So as usual we have to go and change the smaller car tomorrow. One day they may have the car we booked!

Pouring with rain again. We are not used to this! We packed up (again) and dropped Ellie off with Rhys for her holiday. They were a little busy sorting River out as he was off the Kent Uni for freshers weekend. Good luck River.

Then we headed to Torin’s to stay the night. The M25 was horrendous, nothing changes there. I turned off on to the A1 and as I was sitting in the queue at the traffic lights, the car in front of me put his hazard lights on. I pulled into the next lane and then noticed as I was next to him, his car had caught on fire……….I moved quite quickly!

We started our holiday with a take away!
